During the past centuries, there was a rivalry between Portugal and Spain when it comes to discovering new lands and converting its natives into Christianity. During their era, they were the superpower. I would have compared America and Japan as the modern superpowers but unlike the latter, the former does not have a monarchy type of government. So, can it be Great Britain vs. Japan?
